The Ministry of Defence, established on October 1, 1958, oversees Nigeria’s armed forces and defense strategy. Our responsibilities include supervising the Defence Headquarters, Army, Navy, Air Force, and various tri-service institutions.

The vision is to develop a modern, well-equipped military that’s professionally trained, mobile, and capable of fulfilling both national and international peacekeeping duties with pride and efficiency.

The mission is to provide effective administrative and logistical support to Nigeria’s Armed Forces. They aim to maintain a strong, professional military that’s ready to defend our national territory, maritime interests, and airspace, as well as contribute to global peacekeeping efforts.

Key mandates of the Ministry of Defence include:
1. Maintaining combat-ready forces across land, sea, and air
2. Balancing personnel and equipment for internal and external security needs
3. Ensuring troop welfare through training, accommodation, and healthcare
4. Developing local defense industries to reduce foreign dependence
5. Promoting continental security through cooperation
6. Contributing to global peace through UN, AU, and ECOWAS
7. Formulating and executing national defense policy

The Ministry is structured with both civilian and military components. The civilian side comprises six service departments and four operational departments, each led by a Director. The Minister of Defence, assisted by the Minister of State for defence, heads the Ministry, while the Permanent Secretary oversees administrative functions.

The civilian departments include Human Resource Management, Finance and Accounts, Planning, Research and Statistics, Procurement, Legal, and Medical Services. The operational departments cover Joint Services, Army Affairs, Navy Affairs, and Air Force Affairs.

The military component consists of the Defence Headquarters and the individual headquarters for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Chief of Defence Staff coordinates joint operations and training, while Service Chiefs manage their respective branches.
